electro-mechanical miniaturization for medical devices

PROJECT

Miniaturization and packaging of complex PCB Rigid-Flex Assembly

CHALLENGE

Evaluate how best to package a multi-layer complex rigid-flex PCB into the tightest arrangement around a motor.

ACCELERATE

Performed design analyses such as volumetric studies, mock-parts for manipulation, while taking thermal, EMI, and radio frequency communications into account.

RESULT

Arrived at an optimized mechanical layout for PCB layout to be finalized.

PROJECT

Custom Electronic Console

CHALLENGE

A custom backplane PC system based on IEC standard rack-mount enclosure required size-reduction to be part of a mobile cart.

ACCELERATE

Customized Schroff-standard electronics enclosure for integration into a compact mobile-rack console. Cart included over 30 multi-conductor and fiber-optic cables.

RESULT

Designed and collaborated with vendor to produce a fully shielded enclosure-module for the custom cart.

PROJECT

Video Laryngoscope

CHALLENGE

To satisfy User Requirements a Low-Cost, Polka-Yoke blind mate connector was needed for a disposable, while the receiving connector in the reusable device would be suitable for multiple cycles.

ACCELERATE

Modifying a truncated portion of PCI connector set the layout, fabrication, and cycle testing could be considered a proven design. The disposable side could be specified for low insertion cycles while the receiver could be gold plated for high cycles. The connector was then put in a custom housing to prevent other devices from mistakenly being inserted, and mechanica- float was added to allow for auto-alignment when installed.

RESULT

The successfully launched product still uses this connector solution after several years of maturity and newer versions of the product commercialized.

PROJECT

Ruggedized Case
for MIL-STD-810G

CHALLENGE

Expensive and fragile electronic components were cracking when drop tested

ACCELERATE

Case was hardened for drop-testing along with protective rubber over-molded areas added. The internal suspension system and thermal management system was analyzed.

RESULT

With an accelerated design cycle the changes were made and merged into the ongoing design with minimal impact to the overall schedule. Successfully pivoting a key parameter of the device.

PROJECT

Micro Endoscope

CHALLENGE

Prototype custom endoscope cameras with diameters less than 3mm.

ACCELERATE

Developed novel means of adapting Ball Grid
Array Sensor-chip into a flexible cable while keeping within the spatial profile of the chip to meet final diameter specifications.

RESULT

Proof of concept prototypes produced with custom lens, aligned, tested, and sent to customer for evaluation.

Jay and I have worked together on several projects spanning a variety of medical products.  Technologies have had demanding complexity involving optical and electromechanical components that need to be carefully orchestrated together with fine attention to detail.  They met and exceeded my expectations resulting in an accelerated and successful program.
